Power Stroke Turbo FAQs

Which Power Stroke applications do Turbo Time Performance hybrid turbos fit?

Turbo Time Performance offers hybrid replacement turbos engineered for specific Ford Power Stroke applications, including 7.3L, 6.0L, and 6.7L engines. Our hybrid turbos are designed to retain the factory-style mounting location and connect to the original manifolds and applicable factory connections, making them a direct bolt-on upgrade for their specified application.

Are Turbo Time Performance turbos suitable for towing?

All Turbo Time Performance turbos are designed with towing and real-world drivability in mind. Our goal is to provide quick spool-up, strong low- and mid-range response, efficient airflow, and reliable performance under load.

Options such as the 6.0L Stage 1 GXR 61 and 6.7L Stage 1 Predator GXR are designed to deliver responsive power that works well for towing while still providing increased performance when you want it.

6.7L towing option: 6.7L Stage 1 Predator GXR

Is a bigger turbo always better?

Not necessarily. Turbo Time Performance focuses on turbo efficiency rather than simply installing the largest possible compressor or turbine.

A properly designed turbo should provide the airflow needed to support increased horsepower while maintaining quick spool-up and strong response. An oversized turbo can take longer to build boost and may sacrifice drivability.

Our goal is to make each turbo as efficient and responsive as possible.

How much horsepower will a turbo upgrade add?

There is no single horsepower increase that applies to every truck. Actual results depend on the turbo, tuning, fueling, supporting modifications, and overall engine setup.

A turbo rated to support a certain horsepower level indicates its airflow and performance capability. It does not mean that installing the turbo by itself will automatically produce that horsepower.

Will I need tuning or a VGT relearn after installation?

Tuning requirements depend on the specific truck and turbo application. Many Turbo Time Performance hybrid turbos retain the factory-style VGT configuration and mounting design.

Performance tuning may help take full advantage of the turbo's increased airflow and response. Some VGT applications may also require a relearn or calibration procedure following installation.

Turbo Time technical guidance: Tech FAQs

Can I run a Turbo Time Performance turbo with stock injectors?

Yes. Turbo Time Performance designs its turbo lines to operate with stock injectors.

Our focus on turbo efficiency and quick spool-up allows customers to upgrade the turbo without requiring larger injectors simply to make the turbo operate correctly.

Additional fueling may be used on higher-horsepower builds when the customer wants to take advantage of more of the turbo's available airflow and power potential.

Do hybrid turbo upgrades retain the original mounting location?

Yes. Turbo Time Performance specializes in hybrid turbo upgrades designed to retain the original mounting location.

Our hybrid turbos use factory-style housings and mounting architecture so they connect to the truck's original manifolds and applicable factory connections. This allows customers to gain increased airflow and performance without converting the truck to a completely different turbo mounting system.

Always select the Turbo Time turbo designed for your specific engine and model-year application.

What is the difference between a VGT and a non-VGT turbo?

A Variable Geometry Turbocharger, or VGT, changes the effective exhaust flow through the turbine by adjusting internal vanes.

This allows the turbo to respond quickly at lower engine speeds while still providing strong airflow at higher engine speeds. VGT technology can also support functions such as exhaust braking on certain diesel applications.

A non-VGT turbo uses fixed turbine geometry and does not have electronically controlled variable vanes.

What are common symptoms of a failing turbo?

Common symptoms of a failing turbo can include:

  • Reduced power or slower-than-normal boost response
  • Unusual whining, scraping, or siren-like noises
  • Excessive exhaust smoke
  • Increased oil consumption
  • Oil present in the intake or charge-air system
  • Difficulty building boost
  • Excessive shaft movement
  • VGT or turbo-control related trouble codes

These symptoms do not automatically mean the turbocharger itself has failed. Boost leaks, fueling problems, sensors, exhaust restrictions, lubrication issues, or actuator problems can produce similar symptoms.

The truck should be properly diagnosed before replacing the turbo.

What can cause low boost?

Low boost can be caused by several different problems, including intake or charge-air leaks, exhaust leaks, fuel-delivery problems, sensor faults, VGT actuator or vane issues, tuning problems, or an internal turbocharger issue.

After installing a turbo, all connections should be inspected and any required VGT relearn or calibration procedure should be completed.

A qualified diesel technician can help identify the actual cause before unnecessary parts are replaced.
