Duramax/GMC Turbo FAQs
What is the best turbo upgrade for my Duramax/GMC?
The best turbo depends on your engine, how you use your truck, and your horsepower goals. For compatible LLY, LBZ, LMM, and LML applications, Turbo Time’s Stage 1 GXR 62 focuses on towing and everyday driving, while the Stage 2 GXR 64 offers additional airflow for street and towing performance. Duramax/GMC L5P owners have separate GXR-7 options. Always match the turbo to your exact engine and model year.
Is a bigger turbo better for towing with my Duramax/GMC?
Not automatically. A towing setup needs responsive power where you actually drive, especially under load. Choosing a turbo that is too large for your engine and supporting modifications can sacrifice low-RPM response. Our Stage 1 GXR 62 is designed around towing performance; the Stage 2 GXR 64 offers another option for Duramax/GMC trucks that need more airflow alongside everyday usability.
What is the difference between the GXR 62 and GXR 64 Duramax/GMC turbos?
The Stage 1 GXR 62 uses a 62mm billet compressor wheel and is listed to support up to 575 horsepower. The Stage 2 GXR 64 uses a 64mm billet compressor wheel and is listed to support up to 650 horsepower. Both are offered for specific Duramax/GMC applications. These are power-support ratings, not guaranteed horsepower gains from installing the turbo alone.
Do I need tuning after upgrading my Duramax/GMC turbo?
Our Stage 1 Duramax/GMC turbos do not require additional tuning. For Stage 2, tuning is recommended for maximum performance. Stage 3 turbos require tuning.
Will a performance turbo fit my Duramax/GMC without modifications?
All of our Duramax/GMC performance turbos are drop-in replacements that connect directly to your truck’s original piping, so no piping changes are needed for installation. If you add larger injectors and an aggressive tune that dramatically increases horsepower, you’ll need to replace the stock intake piping with a high-flow cold-air intake and an open filter setup without an airbox to support the increased airflow demand.
Will an upgraded Duramax/GMC turbo cause more turbo lag?
It depends on the complete turbo design and how well it matches your engine and tuning. Compressor size alone does not determine response. Turbo Time’s GXR 62 and GXR 64, along with the rest of our Duramax/GMC performance turbo lineup, are designed to combine increased airflow with quick spool response and everyday drivability. Choose around your driving needs rather than the largest wheel size available.
Will I keep my factory exhaust brake with a Duramax/GMC turbo upgrade?
Our applicable GXR 62 and GXR 64 Duramax/GMC listings specify retention of factory electronics and exhaust-brake functionality. This applies to supported trucks equipped with those features; it does not mean every Duramax/GMC originally came with a factory exhaust brake. Confirm compatibility for your exact truck and turbo, especially when considering a non-VGT conversion.
Can a Duramax/GMC turbo upgrade help lower exhaust gas temperatures while towing?
A properly matched turbo can help manage exhaust gas temperatures by supplying airflow suited to the engine’s fueling and load. Results depend on the complete setup, including tuning, intake restrictions, trailer weight, terrain, and driving conditions. A Duramax/GMC turbo upgrade alone does not guarantee a specific temperature reduction.
Are Duramax/GMC turbos interchangeable between LB7, LLY, LBZ, LMM, LML, and L5P engines?
Do not assume they are interchangeable. Turbo fitment, controls, and installation requirements vary between Duramax/GMC generations. Turbo Time lists separate applications, including LLY/LBZ/LMM, LML, and different L5P year ranges. Order by your exact engine and model year, and check the selected product option before checkout.
Do I have to return my old Duramax/GMC turbo, and is there a core charge?
Our Duramax/GMC turbos carry a refundable core deposit included in the displayed price. Return your matching OEM turbo core in salvageable condition to receive the deposit refund. Core deposit amounts vary by model, and free core-return shipping is included. Check your selected turbo’s listing for the applicable deposit and return requirements.
